Historically, this menace became notable during the regime of the second prime minister of Sierra Leone - Sir Albert Margai in 1964; and he was representing the Sierra LeonePeople’s Party. According to many, Prime Minister Margai spontaneously sacked public officials who were from the North of the country especially from the Limba and Temene Ethnic groups, the major tribes in the Northern Region. Though issues of Ethnic sentiments were raised during the regime of President Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People's Congress, however, his government was widely seen as one that was inclusive in terms of regional balance. For instance, the two vice presidents of Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018 are from the South East Regions - which are dominated by Mende and Kono Tribes.
