Hon. Aruna Papay Larkoh Supports Masokoray Community With Building Materials and Cash for the Construction of its Multi-purpose Hall

By Richmond B. Tholley As part of his ongoing efforts to boost community development for constituents, Tonkolili District lawmaker, Hon. Aruna Papay Larkoh has, on January 30th, 2025, handed over building materials and fiscal cash worth millions in local currency for the continuation of the ongoing construction of a multipurpose hall in the Masokoray township. Masokoray is in Kholifa Rowalla Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, Northern Sierra Leone. The items donated to the community include eighteen (18) bundles of zinc, corner ridge, packets of roofing nails, bags of cement, and others worth millions in new Leones. Also, the opposition lawmaker dashed fiscal cash, which he says was his support to the community in the area of food for the workers.  Handing over the items at the Masokoray Community Centre, Hon. Larkoh reminded the community of the promises he made during his campaigns in 2023 to ensure the community owns a multipurpose hall if he becomes a lawmaker. As a fulfilment of his pr...

The Need for Coordinated Efforts to Address the Root Causes of Drugs and their Impact on Sierra Leone

An Opinion By Richmond B. Tholley Of recent, Sierra Leoneans have witnessed a monumental embarrassment as the West African nation is on the international news for drug-related issues. It was so shameful that a Sierra Leonean Embassy vehicle was arrested in neighbouring Guinea with drugs inside. That incident was a diplomatic embarrassment and exposed the country to public ridicule. While Sierra Leoneans are recovering from the trauma of the Embassy saga in Guinea, another embarrassing incident related to drugs involving the country's first family this time emerged again. One of Europe's most wanted fugitives was reportedly hiding in the West African nation of Sierra Leone for at least six months, according to prosecutors in the Netherlands. Convicted Dutch drug trafficker Jos Leijdekkers, 33, was sentenced in absentia by a Rotterdam court last year to 24 years in prison for smuggling more than 7,000kg of cocaine. He is among both Europol and the Netherlands' most wanted c...

Tribute to Ansu Momoh - the man who brings Leone Rock Closer to the people and communities

By Richmond B Tholley It is with deep sorrow and heavy heart that I write this sorrowful tribute of Mr. Ansu Momoh, the Director of Community Affairs at Leone Rock Metal Group. I learned about the death of Mr Momoh through Bashir Koroma, one of Leone Rock's media handlers. Koroma posted an official announcement about the passing of Momoh in a WhatsApp group. I was dumbfounded and my first comment was What with a crying emoji because I was surprised to hear that the man I spoke with a few days ago was dead.  I later called Bashir Koroma over the phone to confirm and to further know the cause of death. With a cool voice, Bashir Koroma confirmed to me that Momoh was no more. I couldn't do anything throughout the day. A friend, brother, pillar and someone I can rely on, the late Ansu Momoh came to this world like a candle; he brightened the lives of others and suddenly disappeared living in darkness the majority who have been enjoying his light. This tribute is coming late days af...

The Environmental Cost of Mining in Sierra Leone: A Crisis in the Making

By: Benedict AbuBakarr Conteh For decades, mining has been a pillar of Sierra Leone’s economy, generating revenue, employment, and foreign investment. However, this economic lifeline comes at a heavy price—one that is often overlooked until it’s too late. Across the country, from Kono to Tonkolili and from Bo to Moyamba, mining activities have left devastating environmental footprints that threaten both human life and biodiversity. In Kono District, the heart of Sierra Leone’s diamond mining industry, entire landscapes have been stripped bare. What was once lush vegetation has turned into vast pits of red earth, abandoned after minerals were extracted. These gaping holes, some as deep as 30 feet, become death traps during the rainy season, flooding with water that breeds disease-carrying mosquitoes and poses a drowning hazard for children. Water pollution is another major consequence of mining. Rivers that once provided clean drinking water for communities have become toxic due to r...

Archbishop of Freetown Refutes Ministry's Statement on Safe Motherhood Bill

Benedict AbuBakarr Conteh - Freetown, Sierra Leone — Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles of the Archdiocese of Freetown has issued a public disclaimer refuting claims made on the Ministry of Information’s website regarding the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill. In a statement dated January 6, 2025, the Archbishop clarified that he has not made any public declaration about the proposed modifications to the bill, contrary to assertions attributed to him. The controversy stems from a post by the Ministry of Information, which implied that Archbishop Charles had acknowledged that the government’s amendments to the bill accommodated religious sensitivities. The Archbishop categorically dismissed the statement as false, emphasizing that he is yet to officially respond to the proposed amendments. According to the Archbishop's statement, the modifications to the bill were only made accessible to religious leaders on January 3, 2025. These documents are currently under review by th...
